Yo-yo

This video was kindly filmed by my brother.

So, anyway, I got an early Christmas present on Saturday: a yo-yo. I love it! It’s my new favourite toy. For years I wished I could use one, and made characters in my stories able to just because I thought it was so cool. Then, when I finally got one on Saturday, I learned how to do it instantly! Now I can join that fine group of people who use a yo-yo, which includes the Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who, Jim-Bob Walton from The Waltons and Ness from Earthbound (who I don’t really know anything about.)

It really makes me quite happy, because I never thought I’d be able to use one. Since I can use one of these, maybe one day I’ll be able to play piano; another thing I’ve often wanted to learn… (yes, I know it’s much harder!)

Musical Oddity

Take a listen to this song:
What did you think of it? Personally, after my first listen, I thought it was really bad. Today, however, I do very much enjoy this song, which is quite odd because I don’t tend to enjoy dance music, and there’s even a hint of dub step in there. But I like this song, in my head, it’s a Christmas song. Around this time last year, a very good friend of mine showed it to me and, as I said, I didn’t like it at first. But, of course, my friend did like this song and, as such, they played it fairly regularly. After I’d heard it loads of times (via them), it slowly began to grow on me. I kept getting it stuck in my head when I was sat around by myself at home. So, in the end, I headed over to iTunes and downloaded myself a copy. I listened to it quite a lot, mainly on bus rides and while baking pizzas, but, I kind of lost interest in it after Christmas now. Recently, I found myself craving the song again, so I listened to it. When I did listen to it, it made me feel really Christmassy and nostalgic for last year (obviously, this is because I listened to it a lot around Christmas time last year). So, for me now, this is a Christmas song. At the moment it gets listened to regularly, but I’ll stop after Christmas day and save it for next year.
I guess it goes to show that context has a lot to do with musical appreciation (or, at least it does in my case). Perhaps a song you hear all the time, but really dislike, will make you happy when you hear it again in old age?

The Rush Hour Show

Have you ever found yourself with nothing to do from 4pm to 6pm on a Tuesday? Well, by golly, I do believe I’ve found the thing for you: The Rush Hour Show. What is it, you ask? Well, basically it’s a radio show which plays a lot of modern music as well as any requests from audience members. But, while the music is nice enough (although, they do play the song Gangnam Style a lot, and I’ve never really enjoyed that) the main appeal for me, is the conversation between my good friend Ben Wood and his co-host Daniel Young, it’s always very entertaining, and even interactive if you use their Facebook page.
Click here for their Facebook page, and here for the place to go when you want to listen. Enjoy!

Also, by writing this entry, I realise that it has been a long time since I wrote any silly tongue-in-cheek entries about my friends. If anybody would like one about them, please let me know! I am more than happy to write them 😀

EDIT: This is now called Monday Night Dinner and aires on Mondays from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Connections

I have quite a strange memory, I tend remember myself at events in the third person. I also tend to feel, most of the time, quite detatched from things that happened to me quite a while ago. But just the other night, at around 2am, I was lying in bed when I realised that I’d left the front door unlocked. I headed down, got my key from my Primary Wallet, and prepared to lock the door. But while I was doing this, I caught a glimpse of my own reflection. I tend not to like looking at my own reflection, but this time I took quite a long look and, in my head, images of myself alongside my various friends popped up. For that brief moment, everything seemed to be connected very strongly. I’ve been thinking about it a lot since, and I realised that my blog has at least one crazy adventure, or nice thing to say about every one of my friends. And for me, that’s a very nice thought.

The Naked Run

I seem to remember being at a house party in 2009, but the strange thing about it was, that none of my closest friends were there, so I can’t quite understand why I was there. But, anyway, this little story starts just after I’d make a quick visit to the house’s toilet. I was coming back downstairs, and a group of three people (I shan’t mention their names) were standing around at the bottom (all of them drunk).
“Hey Adam,” said one of them, male. “We’re just about to play a game, would you like to join in?”
“Well, what game are we playing?” I asked.
“Basically, it’s just called ‘Naked Run’ and we just strip naked and then run around outside.” While he was speaking, he’d been taking his clothes off, and he was standing beside me completely naked by the time he was finished.
“Oh I see, I see. I’m not sure that I’d like that game very much,” I replied.
With that, he opened the door and ran off into the darkness of the night. It was then that I realised that the girl beside me had pulled off her shirt and was about to remove her bra, and that the guy behind me was already stripped down to his boxer shorts.
“Hang on a minute,” I raised my hands to try and ‘halt’ them, “are you entirely sure this is a good idea? It may seem fun now, but is it really worth the inevitable naked photographs that will end up floating around on the internet? I think it’s probably a better idea if you just put your clothes back on.”
They both paused for a moment, and then started to re-dress.
Somebody else came into the hallway, and opened the front door. Outside, the lone naked runner could be seen in the distance running around. This new person laughed to himself, then closed the front door again, pulled out a key and locked it. They key holder ran off, and a few seconds later we could hear the naked person banging on the door and calling to the other one to let him back inside. Luckily, he didn’t seem too sad, and was actually laughing to himself about it. Eventually, the other guy relented and let him back inside. The runner then came up to me and, still naked, put his arm around my shoulder.
“Alright, Adam,” he said. “I was a little disappointed that you weren’t out there running naked alongside me!”
“Oh, I’m sorry! I hope you still had fun on your own.”
“Why didn’t you do it too? In fact, why don’t you do it by yourself right now?”
The two who had almost been naked runners seemed very in favour of this idea.
“Oh, I just don’t really want to.”
“Ah go on Adam, everybody wants you to!” said one of them.
“Well to be perfectly honest with you, I just don’t want anybody to see my absolutely tiny little penis,” I looked at the naked guy and smiled at him.
“Well, that’s fair enough, mate!” he patted me on the back. “At least you’re honest.”
And so that’s the story of the Naked Run. I can’t say that it’s a game I’ve ever come across again! And I can’t say that I’m disappointed by that fact either. Should you ever find yourself involved with a game of it, all I can say is: good luck!

Essential University Tip

I’m sure that anybody who studies at a university and/or college will know that, at certain times of the day, free computers will be a scarcity. Plus, I am also quite sure that most people will have their own ‘favourite’ spot in the various libraries and computer rooms out there. So, readers, I would like to tell you that I have a method that will ensure (with a 99% probability) that you will get the computer you want, at any time of the day.
Here’s the trick: one time, you will have to arrive at the computer room either extra early, or extra late. Once in, sit yourself down at your favourite spot. Open up a word document and create your own ‘out of order’ sign. Then, before you go, put it onto your computer without anybody else seeing. In fact, even if somebody does see you, make it look like you’re putting it there because the computer doesn’t work, rather than for your own evil intentions. From now on, your computer will pretty much always be free! When you come in to use it, take it off and when you’ve finished your work for the day, put it back! Nobody wants to use a broken computer do they?
There is, however, one snag with this plan. Sometimes you’ll come in, only to find a computer technician sitting at your computer trying to figure out what’s wrong with it. When this does happen, lay low with the sign for a while. Wait a week or two. But other than this, you will have no real problems. I used this little trick all the time while I was in The Corsham School Sixth Form, so I can guarantee that it works! Plus, if you feel particularly anti-social, you can put it on the computers beside you, to stop anybody sitting near you (not that I ever did this one!) Happy studying.

Dark Age Deeds of the Celtic Saints

This Friday, I visited the Rondo theatre in Bath along with a very good friend of mine and saw the Dark Age Deeds of the Celtic Saints; a two hour performance by Anthony Nanson and David Metcalfe. The evening consisted of a mixture of storytelling and singing, with Anthony doing the story telling, and David doing the singing.

The first half of the evening was, in my opinion, probably the better half, since it contained a really fantastic tale of monks sailing across the ocean which I’d never heard before. The story alone was amazing, but when combined with Anthony’s superb storytelling skills, it became a real standout performance. There were even a couple of moments of slight humour in these tales and, intentional or not, they added to my overall enjoyment. First, there was a scene when three late coming monks run up to the departing boat, and the leader is unsure of them because one of them looks “shifty”, another looks “downright crazy” but the third looks “easy going” which seems to be an odd reason to distrust somebody, I guess this is an example of the changes between dark age and modern day values! Second, at one point a huge crystalline pillar raises out of the ocean and points towards the sky, “What’s that?” one of them asks, and the reply was “That is a thing!… made by God”, the pause giving it good comedic value! Even if unintentional, I hardly consider this a bad thing.

All of the stories were accompanied by David playing atmospheric music on his drum or guitar. Sometimes this musical addition seemed to compliment a scene perfectly, but at others it didn’t add much more than an extra sound to hear. David, on the whole, did not seem to have as much to do as Anthony, while he did sing all of the songs; the storytelling took up much more of the time. David did also do some of the story telling, but unfortunately for him, he tended only to read the less interesting things, such as the links between stories. But, despite seemingly being a little underused, when David did sing, he gave only excellent performances. He seemed to be very well suited to singing folk music.

The second half, as I said above, did not seem quite as enjoyable as the first, though it was by no means bad. My favourite story from this half was one which featured a Druid, a Christian and the Loch Ness Monster. This story was especially good, I thought, because while all of the others were very Christianity oriented, this one gave a lot of respect to the Druid perspective. I don’t see that there’s anything at all wrong with Christianity being the main orientation of the stories, but it’s nice to see other viewpoints. The ending was also particularly very good, as it linked these Dark Age adventures to the present day and really reinforced the interconnected nature of things (which I really like).

On the whole, an excellent show, performed by two people who were clearly very enthusiastic about their work. Should the show be done again, I heartily suggest you go and see it!
