Trusty Water Advent Calendar (Day 1)

So now it’s December 1st! As you can see, I’ve put the blog’s Christmas decorations up, the Christmas tree in the picture, by the way, is secretly just a giant water bottle disguised as a tree. But anyway, for the next twenty five days I will be updating my blog every single day with a Christmas themed entry, turning it into an advent calendar for those people who are too cool to have an actual chocolate one, but not too cool to read a blog based one. Of course, being a blog, there is the big disadvantage I have of not actually being able to give you chocolate (which is very nice). So I hope you’ll enjoy the Trusty Water Advent Calendar 😀

And gosh darn it! This blog is stuck in America time, so it says that it was written on the 30th November when, in reality, it’s 7:30am December 1st!

Bus Behaviour

_ I was going to give today’s entry the title ‘Bus Etiquette’ but then I decided on ‘Bus Behaviour’ due to the added alliterative appeal. Anyway, I don’t like to have my blog as a place for me to complain about things, though I’m slightly worried that that is how this entry will come across (sorry if that is the case).
Today’s post starts with an anecdote. After a long day of working hard at the university, it was time to go home. I was waiting in line for the bus, and ahead of me was another regular guy. However, there was a subtle difference between he and I, and that subtle difference was that he had a rather sizeable circle of friends (three to be specific) who happened to be walking along beside the bus line. This is what happened, I’ve decided to name the guy waiting in line ‘Norman’:

Dante: Oh hey, Norman.
Ermentrude: Oh yeah! Hey Normy.
Gus: Yo, sup bro?
Norman: Alright homies? Shanking much lately?
Dante: Yeah, we shanking!
Ermentrude: This is for real bro!!
Norman: Oh no, my man Guss here done knocked it out of the park!
All of them: Woo!

(or something like that)

With that, their conversation had come to an end, so I assumed that Dante, Ermantrude and Gus would then all head to the back of the line, but they all then took the three spaces in line behind Norman…

Me: (thinking) Hmm, maybe I should have a word with those three people and ask them politely to move to the back of the line because they’re stealing spaces which aren’t rightfully theirs… Actually, nah, that’s be rude. It’s best if I just leave it, after all, this doesn’t directly affect me in any way!

Five minutes later or so, the bus arrived and the long line of people slowly walked on into the bus. Norman got in, Dante got in, Ermentrude got in, then Gus got in. I was behind them in the line, so now it was my turn to get on I stepped up into the bus and approached the driver, ticket in hand. I was excited to get in so that I could then go home and read books (or whatever else it is that I do in my free time). Then this heartbreaking exchange happened:

Me: Here’s my ticket (smiling happily)
Driver: Sorry mate, the bus is too full, you can’t get on.
Me: Oh, okay… (gets out of bus, smile suffers internal collapse)

Now, is it just me, or is there something wrong with this situation? Shouldn’t the correct rules for queuing at the bus stop be that your friends are perfectly free to chat with you in the line if they are not intending to ride the bus as well, but if they are, you have to move to the back of the line to talk to them. Otherwise, the people with no friends who are near the back of the line are given the further misfortune of having to be further back due to the overly popular people.
Furthermore, I’ve noticed another immorality related to the buses at my university. Often (due to the time of year) it is cold and raining, which is lucky for the people at the front of the line because they get to hide from it in a bus shelter. But then that means the people at the back of the line firstly get soaked while those at the front stay dry and, secondly, that after already being wet, they have to stand up on the bus because the dry people already have the seats. It seems slightly unfair to me.
But like I say, this isn’t supposed to be a complainy blog! Riding on the bus is fun usually, with the gentle vibrations, comfy seats and so on! These are just a couple of things that bother me slightly…

Assume Good Will

Recently (for some reason) one of the rules for editing Wikipedia has been stuck in my head. I haven’t done any editing on Wikipedia for quite a while so this rule may be slightly misremembered, but to the best of my knowledge one of their rules is (as I’m sure you can guess from this title’s entry) that you should assume good will when people have changed something that you’ve written. This, I think, shows just how good Wikipedia is when, even in it’s guidelines of use, you can find an insightful comment on moral philosophy.
If you apply the ‘assume good will’ rule to everyday life it saves you a lot of unhappiness and also ensures that you behave in a moral way. If somebody does something that has negative repercussions for you, you’re likely to get upset for two reasons: firstly, because something bad has been done to you and, secondly, because this implies that whoever did it doesn’t really care about you. Now, it may just be me, but I think the one that’s likely to cause the most stress is the fact that somebody probably doesn’t care that much about you. So, if you ‘assume good will’ when somebody choses to do something bad to you, you won’t feel as bad, because you’ll be assuming that they didn’t have malicious intentions, and to be honest, the majority of times when people upset one another, it is a misunderstanding and things would not escalate so badly if the other person had assumed good will.
Now, my final point, adopting this maxim would make you a better person, and here’s why: Think of something bad you’ve done, the worst thing. When you have done things to people which are ‘immoral’ you haven’t ever done it just to ‘be bad’ or ‘for the evulz’ have you? Every immoral thing you’ve done, will probably have stemmed from the fact that you didn’t assume good will when somebody inadvertently wronged you. You immoral actions were most likely revenge or something similar. Assuming good will, will mean that you avoid this, conflicts won’t escalate as often and you can talk it over with the other person involved in a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere.

I Take Pictures

I’m not talking about myself in the title of today’s blog post, I’m not much of a photographer (well, obviously I have taken photographs before in my life, but I wouldn’t class it as something I do as a hobby), instead the title refers to my good friend TülinKei (pen name). You may remember a few months ago I posted a link to the blog Yellow Kokoro which had entries about Korean music and Doctor Who (amongst other things) well, Stacey is the author of that blog and she has now opened a new one called I Take Pictures which features some very good artistic photos. I suggest you give it a brief visit!

Fooligans

I’ve been feeling rather nostalgic lately and thinking a lot about all the people from my old sixth form. Two years ago, I was really quite a different person, much more strict than I am now. My friends would all go out to parties and events that were mainly alcohol fuelled and I’d reluctantly come along too and then end up annoyed because I found all of the sex/drugs/alcohol that they were into was rather boring and not my kind of thing. So, for a while, I stopped going to any of them, rather antisocial I guess but I wasn’t really enjoying myself at these places so I didn’t see the point in going.

However, as time went by I began to mellow to all the crazy things that my ‘fooligan’ friends seemed to enjoy doing (Fooligan being my affectionate nickname for the group of them) and started coming out with them once every so often. While I still never wanted to join in with the crazy sex/drugs/alcohol stuff, I still enjoyed myself while I was out with them, often ensuring that they didn’t drunkenly harm themselves. I may have ended up in several rather awkward situations with maniacs on the dance-floors of night clubs, but, while uncomfortable at the time, they still gave me stories that I could write up and use for this blog. I decided that, even though it’s not my ideal pastime, I still have fun and enjoy going out with my friends.

Now the majority of my friends have moved away to go to universities that are far away from here and, while I do have new friends (who are pretty wickedsick kind of people) they can’t replace the old ones. These new friends are very different, rather than being taken to nightclubs, I can play writing games with them or be subject to magic tricks, I don’t mean to disregard them at all, I’m very happy to have met them, but you can’t replace people with people. The strangest thing is, going out to the parties and things with my friends, which I used to hate so much, is now something I kind of miss.

Sorry if this entry is rather melancholy! It wasn’t supposed to be.

Weather Forecast

__Surprise, a bonus entry for today! Basically, this’ll just be a small entry to talk about the weather. Thanks to AOL News I read an article about how the temperature is supposedly going to rapidly drop by the end of the week and snow will start falling very soon. All I can say is that I hope it’s true. I mean, I know the big downside of snow; I haven’t had a cold yet this winter but I imagine this would cause me to catch one, and my cheap Converse-style shoes definitely won’t be able to withstand the snow, meaning they’ll be soaked. Plus, I do have to travel fourteen miles most days to get to university, and snow would probably make this a lot harder/annoying (not that it’s hard or annoying at the moment). But I think all of these bad things are really worth it, the last two Christmases have taken place when there has been snow and it’s very cold, and that’s added a lot to the festive feeling of the day. Before then, I don’t remember there being any snowy Christmases and I never really cared, but since we’ve had two now, I’ve gotten used to it, and I’ll be very disappointed without snow this year… So let’s hope that this forecast about possible snow by the end of the week is true!

Random Encounters

Random Encounters is a writing game that I very recently thought up (and am excited to play soon) and would like to teach to other people. This game basically only requires you to have the equipment needed to write and for you to be familiar with the writing of the other person who is playing with you. By being ‘familiar’ I mean you just really need to know information about the other writer’s settings/characters, something which, I hope, won’t be too uncommon. The rest is easy, basically, each person just thinks of one character created by the other person, then when you’ve each thought of one you tell each other and take it in turns to write a very short story (1,000 words at the most to keep it fun) in which the two characters you’ve each thought of meet each other. This game will be especially fun if the two of you write in drastically different genres/styles, it’ll mean that all kind of fun and outlandish stories will have to be thought up in order for the characters to meet. Plus, it will give you some fun pieces of writing to read back again in the future.
There is a, less fun, version of the game you can play if you know another writer but are not wholly familiar with their work, or if each of you are fanfiction writers. Basically you do it exactly the same, except that you think of any fictional character that your partner will know about and see what you get!
I hope you like my idea!

Nadsat

As mentioned in both of the two previous posts, today’s entry will be a follow up to my review of A Clockwork Orange. Specifically, today’s entry will be two original theories of mine about the Nadsat language used in it.
My first theory is that the Nadsat language is not actually a mainstream thing and that the only person who speaks it is Alex; I think this, in a way, makes him more likeable. If Alex really were so insane that he talks in some gibberish language that he invented, then really it’d be quite clear that he isn’t fully responsible for his crimes and that he just did it out of insanity. For all we know from the book, we can’t be certain that this isn’t true, Alex narrates the whole thing in this language, he’s known to be unreliable and he’s also the only source we have that says Nadsat is commonly spoken.
Now for my second theory: the world of A Clockwork Orange is set in an alternate timeline where America surrendered to Russia in the Cold War (for some reason) and then this takes place about a hundred years later. Now, the evidence for this is that the Nadsat language includes many Russian words and variations on Russian words, but nonetheless is recognisably English. This novel was written during the 1960s, a high point in the Cold War, so maybe the dystopia that the story is set in is a reflection of what could happen if Russia were to win…
And so that’s my two theories. I hope they were interesting and that they did not ruin any of the events of the novel for those who have not read it.

The Future of the Trusty Water Blog

I noticed today that I’ve been maintaining this blog for nearly six months now, which I’m quite proud of (not to sound smug). I’m quite surprised really that I continued with it really, it only started when I was sitting in my 6th Form’s study room with Dalfino Madrigal Keyte and he said “Hey, you should start a blog” and so, on a whim, I made this up.
At the start of this week I had decided that Friday’s post would be the final update here on the Trusty Water Blog and had only two more entries planned. One of the two entries was my theory about A Clockwork Orange which I said I would be writing soon, and the other was going to be a final entry, one which explained why it was that I was ending my blog. The reason for this is that, while I do enjoy keeping this blog, it seemed to me that I hadn’t had any particularly good ideas for entries lately and, as such, the general quality was declining and becoming unenjoyable for the readers.
But, last night I was talking to a good friend of mine and they were able to persuade me that I shouldn’t end this blog. They did this by helping me to think up new ideas for this blog and telling me I should try and make entries out of regular days and that, as long as I enjoy it, I should continue and, as such, that’s what I’m going to do.
In fact, there were a couple of blog-worthy things that happened today while I was eating my lunch. They always seem to have The Jeremy Kyle Show on the TV in the university’s canteen for some reason, and the episode playing today looked particularly bizarre: it featured a fat version of Derek Acorah who had cheated on one angry woman with another and so these two angry women were arguing with one another. Every time Jeremy asked Fat!Derek to talk one of the angry women would talk for him and he never said a word… Such an odd show. But then I was distracted when some guy left his sandwich box on the table when he was so close to a bin and I thought that was just plain lazy.
But yes, this entry is just a warning that you shouldn’t expect too much from future entries, but that it will be updated regularly nonetheless. I guess I’ll also use this time to say this: What would you like to read on here? Please comment if there is any subject you’d like me to talk about.

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Clockwork OrangeA Clockwork Orange is a novel set in a dystopian future where we learn about the adventures about a young trouble maker named Alex. Now, I called him a ‘trouble maker’ but really Alex is much worse than any regular old fooligan… But you may not notice it. The novel is very experimental, and in a rather admirable way, in that Burgess has created a whole slang language which, I assume, is supposed to be the way all teenagers talk in the future (Nadsat, the language is called). Now, before I continue with the review, I’m going to give you a very big warning about the explicit nature of this book: basically, Alex rapes and brutally attacks/murders people. Luckily, the Nadsat language is a kind of censor for all this ultra-violence because, when it’s happening, you’re still learning what the Nadsat words mean and so you won’t be entirely sure what is happening. But what’s really clever about Nadsat is that, as you read more and more, you slowly learn the language and by the end, you’ll have horrible realisations about what Alex was actually doing near the start… Well, you might anyway, I never noticed until other people mentioned it to me.

Another interesting point about this book is that, while Alex is introduced as a very detestable character, I have to insist that you don’t give up on the book at the start. You probably will get annoyed/bored with reading all about the bad crimes that Alex commits, but about half way through Alex is captured and gradually becomes more and more likeable, and then an interesting philosophical question is asked: Is it better to choose to be bad than to be forced to be good? I shan’t tell you how it’s answered!

Despite dealing with rather uncomfortable subjects, I still liked this book, so I rate it as a 7.4/10.

Buy it here.
