Oil Panic

Oil PanicOil Panic is one of the better known games from Nintendo’s Game & Watch range. This one is played across two screens and was actually the first double screened Game & Watch, making it quite significant from a historical perspective.

Like all Game & Watch games, you complete a simple task over and over again (as it becomes increasingly difficult) in order to try and get the highest possible score. In this one you play as a person (probably Mr. Game & Watch) who holds a couple of buckets which they use to catch falling drops of oil; there are several small flames on the ground and if a drop hits the ground, the fire will engulf you. Once you’ve caught the oil, you have to toss it out of the building, either through the left side of the room or the right side. The oil you toss out then goes down onto the bottom screen, where  a man is hurrying back and forth with a big oil drum. You have to toss the oil out at just the right time for the oil drum man to catch it – if you miss, it will land on innocent people standing near gas pumps.

While I can describe the game play, it’s hard for me to fully understand what’s going on. Why do you appear to be on the second floor of a petrol station? Where is the oil coming from? Why do there appear to be customers at a petrol station which is on fire? It’s all a bit of a weird situation. That’s not to mention that it quickly becomes very hard too; the person with the oil drum seems to move very quickly and oil drops are falling all around. It really takes a while to get into the swing of Oil Panic. I think it’s the kind of thing which will probably mainly only appeal to big Nintendo fans, like me.

Before the First Expedition (a Deep Time Fan Fiction)

Behind a curtain of tumbling water, somebody was bathing. Their olive brown form turning a slow pirouette in the black spray from the falls seemed to form a kind of dreamlike dance, perfectly in tune to the rhythm of the running water and the birdsong of the trees. The forest vibrated with the strident buzz of bush crickets, the chatter of bulbuls, the shriek of a parrot. Everything moved together in unison, all part of the intricate symphony of reality – the sounds, the smells, the very feeling in the air. It was all one. It was all beautiful.

Well, that’s not entirely true. There was one thing which was a little at odds with its surroundings, one thing that didn’t seem to be quite in tune with the vibration of the forest or the symphony of reality. Well, not one thing. One person. One middle-aged man.

“Hello, my name is Morris,” he said, but he had spoken so quietly that even he could barely here his voice against all of noises around him.

Morris waited a few seconds for a reply and then frowned in confusion when he didn’t get one. Perhaps this wasn’t Dr. Boann after all – that was the name of the woman he was looking for.

“You’ll find her at the falls. She goes their to meditate,” that’s what he’d been told, but this lady didn’t seem to be expecting him. Morris had assumed that that was Dr. Boann, and if it wasn’t, he didn’t really know what to do. So he just stood there and did nothing.

After a while, she looked in his direction and Morris took it as an invitation to approach.

“Hello, my name is Morris,” he said again.

“It’s beautiful here, isn’t it?” she said, as she slipped into a pagne and tied her hair back with a yellow ribbon. “There’s such a peaceful energy in this place.”

Morris stared at her vacantly.

“Who are you?” she asked, after a few moments of silence.

“My name is Morris,” he said again.

“Yes, I heard that,” she replied, “but what I mean is, what is your purpose for being here?”

“I was looking for Dr. Boann, but I am hoping that you are her and I have found her,” he said, offering a simple smile.

“You have. But why have were you looking for me? I assume it’s more than just you wanting to watch me under the waterfall.”

“Why would I want to watch you?” he asked, again confused.

“Well, I was naked. I know a lot of people who aren’t from around here haven’t yet embraced nudity for the natural thing that it is.”

“Oh. I didn’t realise that you were naked. The reason I am here is because I was eating my Cheerios the other day and then there was this piece of paper inside and then I looked at the piece of paper and it turned out that I won the chance to go on an African expedition. So then I called up the Cheerios people to find out what I had to do next and then I-”

“I’m starting to see the picture,” she said. “I’d forgotten the Commune had agreed to this. They must have needed the funding. But I suppose-”

She paused as she spotted something nearby. With a flick of her eyes she indicated to the far side of the pool. It took a few more flicks before Morris realised what she was trying to do.

Partly concealed in the eaves of the forest was a dark coloured animal; an okapi. Morris didn’t spot it at first though and squinted as he glanced vaguely in the direction that Dr. Boann had gestured.

When he spotted it, he suddenly screamed and clung onto Dr. Boann for safety. The okapi ran off in fear.

Dr. Boann tried to conceal a sigh.

“Sorry,” said Morris. “I am a bit scared of horses.”

“That wasn’t a horse, it-” she paused, not wanting to waste her energy. “Aren’t you hot?”

Morris was wearing a beige jacket and a beige pair of trousers, a long sleeved white shirt and appeared to be wearing a vest underneath that as well – the kind of outfit which would make somebody uncomfortable on a warm October afternoon in England, let alone in a tropical climate.

“No,” said Morris.

The two walked on in silence. For any other two people it would have been an uneasy silence, but Morris had his lower perspectives and Dr. Boann had her higher perspectives, so neither of them were too concerned with socially awkward situations. But the way Morris walked on, seemingly entirely ignorant of all the beauty around him, was frustrating for Dr. Boann and eventually she grabbed a hold of one of his hands.

“Morris, might I ask you to do something?”

“Yes, you can ask me to do something,” he replied.

“Look at the beauty that surrounds you. It’s like it was all made just right. The perfect shape of the falls. The balance between the width of the pool and the height of the trees so enough sunlight comes through to make a rainbow. The gently sloping banks so animals can go down there to drink. The ledge behind the falls, just wide enough for a person… And see how the cliff overhangs us so there’s shelter when it rains. Everything here is just right. Don’t you think that’s incredible?”

“Yes, I guess it is,” said Morris.

“What’s going through your mind right now?” she urged him.

“I was just thinking that it has been a long time since I last saw Spy Kids 2. That is my favourite movie.”

Dr. Boann said nothing and silently hoped that the cryptozoologist due to visit next year was a little more appealing.

(Deep Time is a fantastic novel by ecobardic storyteller Anthony Nanson and you should definitely go out and buy it! Here is my review. Morris is a character of mine and I just thought it would be fun to mix those two entirely different things together. I wrote this as a birthday present for Anthony, as I know him, so I hope he’ll enjoy it and not think of it as a terrible offense to his creation!)

Things Which Stay the Same as Everything Changes

I got on the bus at the end of the day today and collected my StreetPass hits on my 3DS – just like I did at the end of work days last year when at my last job, just like I did in 2014 during my last year at university, just like like I did in 2013 and all the way back to 2011. My life now is very very different to how it was then, but it’s nice that that one thing stayed the same. I have over 3,000 StreetPass hits on my 3DS and its been building up throughout this whole time: I am so lucky to still have this data, since I almost lost my 3DS the other day.

This got me thinking about the things that stay the same while everything else changes. Of course, there’s my Trusty Water Bottle – I’ve had it since 2008 and not only does it always provide me with delicious and healthy water, but it’s always nice to see how different people engage with it. In fact, I wrote about that once before.

Another thing that I often like to reflect on is the fact that I have had several pieces of clothing for a long time. Sometimes I’ll wear a particular shirt and remember a very nice time I had while wearing that shirt many years ago – it’s nice to have things feel connected like this. This is actually something else I’ve written about before.

But there’s one last thing which doesn’t seem to change: me. As the years go by I meet new people and form new circles of friends all the time – this is something I love endlessly, but as I do, I find myself having conversations or sharing moments of affection with people which echo moments with other people in the past. They’re just occasional moments, but they stand out. As time goes by, I never care any less about my friends and I always want to see them. In a way there’s a constant, unending cycle of people in our lives, and actually that’s a little sad.

The one thing that never changes, is the fact that things always change.

To Despise or Pity?

I tend to get on with everybody I meet, but I’ve had a lot of trouble with somebody recently. Not only do they have a lot of habits which are very annoying, but they are always very rude to me, very rude to my friends and just generally somebody who is very unethical and ignorant of other’s feelings. They’re just about the worst possible combination of ignorant, arrogant, unintelligent and selfish.

Essentially, everybody I know who knows this person can’t stand them – and understandably so; if somebody causes so much stress for you, you’ve no reason to like them. But the thing is, while everybody holds a negative opinion of this person, he doesn’t seem to particularly dislike anybody; in fact there are a lot of cases where they actually seem to like people more than they like them. With this in mind, I can’t help but wonder: are they somebody to be despised or pitied?

If somebody is doing loads of thoughtless and immoral things without the slightest idea that what they’re doing is wrong, don’t you have to feel sorry for them? They think that they’re an amazing person, that everybody loves them and that they do a lot of good, when in reality all of those things are the opposite of true. It’s a subject I grapple with a lot.

Isn’t the thought of that person finding out and then being utterly heartbroken something that’s really upsetting? To me it is, at least. And that’s what I struggle with: it’s hard to be too negative towards this feelings, because its hard for me not to view many of these flaws (especially things like arrogance) as manifestations of insecurity and ignorance, rather than malice.

Perhaps I’m wrong and they know how much trouble they cause everybody and they just don’t care. Maybe they even intentionally say or do things to make people feel like I do, so that they’re less likely to oppose them – an arch manipulator. But it’s so hard to tell and it creates a sad mixture of anger and guilt. I don’t really like to feel negative emotions towards a person, because I think when somebody holds negative emotions, it will always end up harming them.

Pikmin

PikminThe Gamecube era was a time of experimentation for Nintendo and one of their biggest experiments during that time was starting the Pikmin series. Pikmin is definitely one of the most unique Nintendo franchises and this is the game that started it off.

In this game you play as Captain Olimar, who crashes his spaceship on a mysterious planet. Olimar’s ship is very badly damaged and pieces of it are scattered around several different areas on the planet. With the help of small creatures called Pikmin, Olimar has to make sure he survives on the strange planet while collecting the pieces he needs to rebuild his ship.

The thing about the planet Olimar has found himself on is that it seems very, very much like Earth, with the only problem being that Olimar is tiny (insect size, in fact) and he has to fight lots of other insect-like creatures. Olimar himself is very weak and cannot really fight, so he has to use huge hoards of Pikmin to fight for him.

The game plays as a real time strategy and Olimar commands up to one hundred Pikmin at once. They follow behind him in a huge group and can do all kinds of things; retrieve ship parts, build bridges, fight creatures and more. As Olimar you just throw them towards whatever you want done and they will do it. Different coloured Pikmin can do different things too; red are immune to fire, blue can breathe under water and yellow can carry bombs. It’s simple but effective. It’s very satisfying to perfectly strategise a fight against a huge creature and then retrieve a ship part and bring it back to the ship, all without having any Pikmin die. By the way, when any Pikmin do die, you’ll probably feel very guilty as they are very cute and innocent creatures.

What hangs over the whole game is the fact that Olimar only has thirty days’ worth of oxygen and after that, he will have to attempt to leave regardless of how many ship parts have been restored. This time limit gives the whole game a much appreciated sense of urgency – especially as you’re not given much guidance and can do things in whatever order you want. This coupled with the often rather ambient music creates a very atmospheric game. It may be a bit short, but Pikmin provides an excellent experience.

Pacifism

I am a pacifist; I have been for as long as I can remember. Probably for as long as I’ve been able to fully understand and appreciate the concept of pacifism. I know some people say that pacifism is something that nobody would ever actually use when faced with violence, but it’s come in handy once, or twice, or thrice (and maybe other times which don’t spring to my mind right now.)

But actually, while pacifism is still my general rule for conflict, I’ve recently identified a bit of a flaw in that perspective. Pacifism is a choice and I am free to make that choice for myself when faced with violence, but what about if I were with a friend who was facing violence? Or, indeed, any innocent person? Especially somebody who can’t defend themselves. I don’t believe I have the right to make that choice for others because that could well result in them suffering. If I have the ability to stop an innocent person from suffering through the use of physical force, then I believe I have a moral duty to do so, as much as it may feel at odds with my own morality; wouldn’t it be enormously selfish to do nothing in the name of moral superiority? Ironically, that would make the moral superiority in this case an actual case of moral inferiority.

Of course, things would be a little different if the other person were a pacifist too, but this has been quite an interesting reflection for me who, for years, has subscribed to absolute pacifism. I suppose it’s always important for us to challenge and reflect upon our most firmly held beliefs – I think it’s quite healthy (and important) for people to change their beliefs as they grow older, so I always like to challenge my own perspectives whenever I can.

Mario Kart 7

Mario Kart 7This is the seventh Mario Kart game. Some people might expect the series to have gotten stale by this point, and it does actually have a bit of a bad reputation, but I think Mario Kart 7 is very good.

As usual, you start off with eight characters, this time it’s: Mairo, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Toad, Yoshi, Koopa Troopa and Donkey Kong. There are then nine unlockable characters, including four who had never appeared in any capacity before. I like the choice of characters in some ways, because there are fun and unusual choices in there, but on the other hand there are obvious options like Diddy Kong and Waluigi who are absent.

What I’m especially pleased with is the number of great tracks in Mario Kart 7. There’s a new track based on Donkey Kong Country Returns, two tracks on Wuhu Island (from the Wii series games), one called Wario Shipyard (which actually seems to draw from Wario Land games a little), Rosalina’s Ice World (a snowy, alien planet) and other great new tracks too. Then you’ve also got some really good returning tracks, like Kalamari Desert (from Mario Kart 64), the original Rainbow Road (from Super Mario Kart) and Airship Fortress (from Mario Kart DS.) It honestly has one of the best track selections in the series.

The unique selling point of the game is the fact that the karts can now go underwater in certain areas and sprout a glider and fly at times too. This is a fun little addition which helps to add more variety to the tracks, but it’s a bit of a minor thing. You are also given the option to race against other players ghosts with the help of StreetPass functionality, which is a good way to improve replayability. The sad thing is, that this game is a bit of a step down from Mario Kart Wii (because it has fewer characters, no 12-player races and no bikes) which I think causes people to judge it unfairly, but I still found it very enjoyable. I spent quite a large number of hours playing the game online an it’s still something I dip into from time to time. Well worth a play.
