Top 10 Saddest Moments in TV Shows and Films Part 1

As you’ll know from yesterday’s post, and also from a post I wrote a few days ago, I’ve been planning on writing an entry about the saddest moments in TV shows and films. This entry is actually slightly broader than the title would have you believe as I’m also including internet series in my top 10 saddest moments. Due to length, I’ve decided I’ll post this over two days as people may not like to read such a long entry.  I should also warn you that there will be spoilers in this post, so if one of the items on my list is of a series you like but aren’t fully up to date with you may wish not to read it.
10. Friends: The Last One
I’m sure you know what Friends is, it’s one of those comedies that almost everybody likes with only very few exceptions. The sad moment I’m using from Friends is from the episode The Last One, which just so happens to be the very last episode. All the main characters are together in the empty apartment where a lot of the action from the series took place over the last ten years, except it’s all empty now because none of them will be living there anymore. They’re all about to go their separate ways and this is true of both the characters and the actors who were all very upset about it being the end, it was the end of an era after all. This one isn’t really any tragedy or anything (unlike some of the later entries) more a bittersweet ending, earning it a spot at number ten.
9. Summer Heights High: Episode 8
You may not have heard of this series, so I’ll briefly explain it to you: it’s a comedy series written by and starring Chris Lilley, showing the lives of three people who attend Summer Heights High School in Australia: Jonah, a trouble making Year 8 boy, Ja’mie, a snobbish Year 11 girl and Mr. G, an egotistical, flamboyant drama teacher. The sad moment in this series is from Episode 8 when Jonah learns that he has been expelled (and for something relatively minor). He ignores his instruction to empty his locker and goes to his lesson as usual, though it’s clear that he’s very unhappy about it. Then a member of staff comes along and drags him out of there, while Jonah strongly resists. It’s pretty sad as Jonah is the most likable of the three characters and you already know that his future looks rather grim as his father says that if he gets expelled he won’t be going to any other school.
8. Frasier: Visions of Daphne
Frasier, the series about two somewhat pompous physiatrist brothers, earns the spot at number eight for the ending of the episode Visions of Daphne. We’ve seen throughout the series that the character Niles has quite a crush on Daphne, and after his wife leaves him, he tries several times to tell her how he feels, but always fails. At the end of this episode Daphne gets engaged to a man named Donny, and announces it to everybody, including Niles who we see sitting miserably on the sofa, unable to express how sad he is because he doesn’t want her to find out how he feels…
7. Doctor Who: The Green Death
This’ll probably be the nerdiest entry on the list, but who cares? I love Doctor Who! It’s great! Now, the episode The Green Death, isn’t a particularly sad one, it’s mainly about giant maggots terrorising the English countryside, but it has a very sad ending. During the course of the story The Doctor’s companion, Jo Grant, meets and falls in love with a young man (I forget the character’s name). At the end of the story Jo gets engaged to this man and everybody has a big party to celebrate. However, this, of course, means that she can’t stay with The Doctor anymore, so The Doctor quietly sneaks out of the celebration party and drives home alone in the dark, having lost his friend to somebody else…
6. The Waltons: The Empty Nest
The Waltons is so good; it’s basically about a family living in 1930s America (and later 1940s America) and makes good use of both comedy and drama. Throughout the first six seasons the grandfather of the family, Zebulon Walton, was played by actor Will Geer, and was probably the most playful and humorous of all the characters. However, Will Geer sadly died before they started filming the seventh season and so the first episode of that series is about the characters coming to terms with Zebulon’s death. At the end of the episode they all gather round his grave and say their goodbyes, the fact that the actor was actually dead and that the other actors probably didn’t need to act to appear to be mourning makes the whole episode very sad (especially as it’s about the status quo of their life changing for all of them).

So that’s 10-6 of the moments I think are saddest in TV Shows and films (though no films are on this list yet). What do you think will be in 5-1? I can assure you that the final episode of the fourth series of Blackadder will not be on the list, I’ve been shown the clip so many times that it’s beginning to lose its effect on me, so it will not have a place in my top ten (if that’s what you’re expecting).

Darn Refresh

I spent hours writing ‘Top 10 Saddest Moments in TV Shows and Films’ then the page suddenly refreshed and it was gone! Unfortunately, I won’t have time to write it out again today, so the entry is postponed until tomorrow.

Winter

Lately, I’ve had a few people despairingly say to me that winter is coming soon and that already summer is coming to its end. Now, it is slightly disappointing that we’ll soon be losing the long days and warmth of the summer, but winter is, in my opinion, underappreciated.
As such, I’ve decided to use today’s blog entry to talk all about the things that we can look forward to in the months to come. I think the most obvious appeal of winter, is that this is the time of year that contains Christmas, and with Christmas comes the joys of finding great gifts for all your close friends and family, and of course, on the flip side of that point, the joys of receiving great gifts from close friends and family. But rather than focusing on all the really great things about Christmas, I’ll talk about good things that apply more generally just to winter.
Firstly, during the summer, it’s often so hot at night, that it takes up a large amount of time simply trying to get cool and comfortable before you can sleep, but in the winter, the whole bed is comfortable and you’ll spend a good part of the day looking forward to its warm embrace in the night. Sleeping isn’t as relaxing at any other time of year as it is during winter.
Secondly, when it doesn’t get dark until around 9 p.m. or 10 p.m., don’t you begin to miss ever having a walk in the darkness? I don’t know, perhaps this point only applies to me, but I think that there’s something that’s strangely peaceful about being out in the dark… Especially when it’s cold out too. Plus, there’s the pleasure of coming into a nice warm house (where all of your favourite things are) which can never be enjoyed during the summer.
Finally, there’s snow during winter. This may seem like a rather bad point, I mean, after all, snow is a problem: it stops mobility, is very cold and will eventually be very slippery. But there’s a thrill, at least in my case, that you’ll always get when you open your curtains in the morning and find the world covered in pure white snow.
I hope this has cheered up those of you who are miserable about the end of summer, and I’d also like to apologise for posting this entry so late!

Suicide Girl

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it before on this blog (if I have, I’m sorry for repeating myself) but a lot of random strangers add me on Facebook, MSN and all of those kinds of sites that I’m a member of. One day, roughly a year ago, I was happily on my laptop and not really doing anything in particular. Then, when I signed onto MSN I found that I had a new friend request (or whatever it’s called when it’s on MSN.)

I accepted the mysterious friend request (assuming that it was somebody I knew in real life who had yet to add me on there) and almost immediately this person (who I later learned was female, but I won’t put their name) began talking to me. It turns out this girl was somebody who was planning on killing themselves sometime soon (their boyfriend had left them or something) and they had chosen me, of all people, to be the person to persuade them not to do it. However, it did take me a while to figure out what exactly her intentions were… Here is a rough transcript (working from memory as usual) of how the conversation turned out:

Suicide Girl: Hey, can you overdose from aspirin?

Me: Well, I don’t think you can die (because I don’t think you’d be able to get a large enough number of them) but it’d probably make you sick. But nothing really to worry about.

Suicide Girl: Damn.

Me: Wait, I don’t think you understand what an overdose is. You don’t want to overdose!

Girl: Yes, I do.

Me: Usually when you say that somebody has overdosed, it means they actually died from taking too many drugs. It doesn’t mean getting some kind of high or anything.

Suicide Girl: I know what it means, I want to die.

Me: You shouldn’t want to die, what’s your reason for wanting to die?

Suicide Girl: My boyfriend left me after a long time, I loved him, now I have nobody. (I really can’t remember the exact details, but it was something like that.)

Me: How old are you?

Suicide Girl: 14. (She may have been a little older, I can’t remember properly.)

Me: Yes… Well I think I should tell you that it’s quite rare for people to find the love of their lives at such a young age. I’m sure you’ll find somebody else, you’ll be fine.

Suicide Girl: No I won’t I only love him, my life is meaningless now.

Me: I don’t suppose you’ve heard the song Everybody Hurts by REM have you?

Suicide Girl: No I haven’t.

Me: Well maybe you should listen to it (I pasted her a link to it on YouTube)

(The length of the song Everybody Hurts by REM later…)

Me: Still wanting to kill yourself?

Suicide Girl: No, I just feel numb.

Me: Goood 😀 heh heh heh.

And so that’s the story of the suicidal girl who decided I would be the one to stop her. I spoke to her regularly for a while after, to make sure she was alright long-term (and she was.) If you’re reading this and feeling suicidal, maybe you should talk to me, as this’ll show you, with the combined effort of myself and REM, you’ll be persuaded not too! Or, at least, I hope so.

Always Plan Your Good Deeds

A couple of days ago I met up with a few of my friends at a local pub called The Great Western. It was a nice social affair (apart from my friends Elliott Egan and Mike Wing trying to teach me obscure and extremely explicit sexual manoeuvres) and I had a pretty good time. However, while there, I attempted to do something I perceived as a good deed, but it went terribly badly.

Here’s how it played out:
Elliott Egan: So anyway, to donkey punch a girl you have too…
Danielle Tyler: Can anybody lend me some money?
Me: (Thinking: Thank goodness for the distraction!) Yeah, of course, take what you want…
I then reached into the pocket of my jacket, grabbed my wallet, and threw it towards her. Unfortunately, I’m rather lacking in all hand-eye coordination skills and so my aim was rather off, so rather than landing nicely beside her (as I planned it to) it hit her glass of  drink and all spilled directly all over her and into her hand bag (probably ruining several of her things).
Dani then ran off with one of her friends, she was very angry and upset about it. She was alcoholically impaired at the time, so her reaction doesn’t accurately represent her usually gentle and imperturbable behaviour. A little while later, Dani returned, so I was eager to make my apology. This didn’t go quite as planned either:
Me: (I said this at the same time as Elliott Egan spoke, I’ll write what he said below my own words) Hey, I’m really sorry about spilling your drink I-
Egan: Hey Dani, pyjama party at Karma this Thursday, don’t go to Turkey go to-
Dani: (presumably to both of us) Darn off!
(In case you can’t tell, I’m using ‘darn’ to substitute a different four letter word, as I always do on this blog)

I’ve since been able to properly apologise to Danielle for being so clumsy, but I think you should take away from this the moral of the story: that you should never do anything erratically (like throwing a wallet to do a good deed) things only go well when you plan them out and do them nice and slowly.

The Beatles

I’ve decided that I’ll use my entry for today to talk about my favourite band which, as I’m sure you can gather from the title, is The Beatles. Now, I may be wrong, but I’m fairly sure everybody likes at least one song by them. If you’re going to try and insist otherwise, perhaps you’re forgetting a song by them: I am the Walrus? Hey Jude? I Want to Hold Your Hand? All You Need is Love? You must like one of them!
The reason, I think, that The Beatles are so good is down to the vast variety of styles in their songs. Perhaps you want a sad kind of song, then you listen to While My Guitar Gently Weeps, or a happy one, then you listen to Here Comes the Sun, or perhaps you’re a crazy person who likes weird avant-garde stuff, then you can listen to Revolution 9.
Plus, aside from some of their earlier music, The Beatles do have a very particular style that encompasses all of their songs; the ‘sound’ of their music is very unique. Partly and this even includes the earliest things, I think this is down to the Liverpudlian accents, something not very often heard in music.
But, other than just mindlessly praising The Beatles, I’ll use this entry so that I can tell you about some of their really good but lesser known songs. I won’t give you links, as I don’t think I legally can, but search for What’s the New Mary Jane, Not Guilty or Free as a Bird, I’m sure you’ll like at least one!

Very Late Post: A Scary Story

Almost forgot to write an entry today but now, before I go to bed, I’ll tell you a short scary story….
I’m sure you’re locked away peacefully in your bedrooms right now, a small area of light and safety, while outside the creatures of darkness crawl over the surface of the Earth… or something less poetic.
But I’ve only just gotten home, and during my stroll I spotted a very weird person. I couldn’t really see them; they were covered completely by shadow and punching against the wall, which made a clanging noise. They just stood there and did that continuously, punching at regular intervals and standing perfectly still. I watched them as I walked by, and they didn’t stop this strange process even for a second. The whole time I was in the area, about five to ten minutes, I could hear him doing it.
I’m sure this was just some strange drunkard who wasn’t entirely sure what he was doing, nonetheless, he did seem rather creepy at the time.
I apologise for a rather short and uninteresting entry, but I’m rather tired and can’t think up a full one at the moment.

The Difficulty of Maintaining This Blog

As you, my readers, probably know, I update this blog with a new entry every single day and have done for about the last four months. I do actually enjoy writing every day and I’m glad that this blog ensures that I do.
However, by forcing myself to write a new entry every single day it means that the majority of my entries are rather bad or mediocre at best, with only the rare one being noteworthy. Also, you may not know, but I also keep a journal and write short stories as well, but writing a new entry in this blog every day means that I have neglected doing them somewhat (especially my journal).
As such, I’m considering updating the blog three or four times a week, rather than every day. This will hopefully mean that the quality of entries will increase and that I will have more time to spend on my other writing projects. I’ll still continue to write new entries every day for the rest of the month, but will probably reduce it to three a week from September 1st onward. If a lot of people will be unhappy about this, I’ll continue to do it every day, but I’m sure nobody will mind the reduction, it’ll mean no more terrible entries after all!

Grave of the Fireflies

So I’ve decided that, from now on, I’ll occasionally review films as well as books, so this will be the first of, what I hope will eventually be, many film reviews.

Recently a friend of mine lent me the DVD of the English dub of Grave of the Fireflies. For those who haven’t heard of it (which would have included me until I borrowed it) it’s an animated Japanese film set during the Second World War and is about two orphans trying to survive. After watching it, I liked it so much, that it’s now amongst my favourite films; the art style means there are lots of nice looking landscapes in it and it also serves to put a metaphorical exclamation point on the strong emotions in the film. In fact, I’m going to say that this is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen out of all TV shows and films (perhaps I could make a future entry about sad part in films and TV shows), so if you’re the kind of person who gets rather upset by films, you probably shouldn’t watch this. The characters are so well built up too, the main two anyway, and you’ll quickly grow to like them and care for them.

The only real downside to the film is that it doesn’t really start that well, the first five minutes aren’t that good really, and don’t (in my opinion) fit with the rest of the film. Also, perhaps some of the English voice actors for minor characters could have acted better, one or two sound every unenthusiastic, but they’re only minor characters.

On the whole, like I said before, this film is really good and I put it amongst my favourites, I’d rate it as 9.5/10

Buy it here.

Final Time in the Clubs

Last night I made my third visit to the night clubs of Bath, this time in celebration of getting good grades on results day. Now, after the previous two visits Elliott Egan has insisted that I have some kind of secret ‘gift’ that attracts members of the opposite sex to me. I thought “Oh, well it’s just a coincidence that those females (and males) came after me when I went to this clubs in the past; Egan will see that he’s wrong when nobody does that this time…” However, when I did go to the club (Po-Na-Na it was called), which was after going to the bar nicknamed Revs; I was almost immediately proved wrong.

When I got there it was fairly early so the dance-floor was mostly empty, it was just me, a few people I knew and a few random females that I didn’t know. I started dancing very slightly, head bobbing and things like that, and within five minutes of being out on the dance floor, a random female put her arm up around my neck and started dancing very close to me, rubbing against me even. Now, this was much more than any of them had done previously, so I had to quickly think of a way out of the situation. In a past entry, I’ve mentioned the commonly told technique of getting wasps to leave you alone (to ignore them, or alternatively to remain still) so I ignored her and carried on as if she wasn’t there. This technique didn’t work, just like it doesn’t work on wasps, and the random female instead got even more close to me by wrapping both arms around me.

Things were getting drastic, this female had her hands all over me and was dancing rubbing her body against mine, I couldn’t think of any escape. Eventually I thought of a way to shake her off (quite literally); I just started shaking around as if I was having some kind of seizure and she let go of me, so I quickly used that as a chance to escape! I ran to the seats in the bar area of the club and sat down with some people, the dance floor wouldn’t be a safe place to go… After a little while I went outside because I didn’t really like it in there and waited until it was time to leave… It wasn’t that good a night.

On the bright side, however, I got some nice cheese and chips from a burger stand AND Egan drunkenly called me ‘the nicest man in the world’ so that kind of made up for it. I doubt, though, that I will be going there again, at least not any time soon.
