MeetMe Review

There days, I don’t have any friends. Well, I suppose that’s not strictly true; I still have one or two friends, but they’re all quite busy so I usually go weeks between socialising. As somebody who is very social, you can see why I am very keen to meet new people and make new friends. One website that I wanted to try was called MeetMe.
I thought MeetMe seemed pretty good, because it was just about the only website made for meeting new people which wasn’t based around dating and the creation of romantic relationships. Having said that, once I was on there it seemed that the majority of people were looking for potential romantic partners anyway, which was a shame. Why not just use Tinder or something which was designed specifically to be a dating site? Nonetheless, there were quite a lot of people that I did get a chance to talk to.
So did I find it useful? Sadly, not at all. There were so, so many people on there who were hugely sexist, racist or who were just otherwise ignorant of others and a large number of people who were aggressively sexual. A lot of people lied and a lot of people were rude. It was an all too common sight to find somebody writing a fairly regular status (in many ways the service works like Facebook) only to have really harsh responses. Bullying was far too common. There were a few people who I ended up chatting to on Skype; they always tended to put a lot of pressure on me to go on camera and talk to them physically (or other, much worse things!) when it wasn’t something I was able to do/wanted to do. A lot of them shared some very intense personal information with me, and I tried hard to offer good advice for their problems, but then they’d unexpectedly disappear. Finally, a large number of people just didn’t reply.
Generally, I found the MeetMe community to reflect some of the ugliest aspects of humanity. If you are looking to make new friends, I would not use this; it will just be a waste of time. I don’t want to generalise the whole group, but I could understand why a lot of the people on there didn’t have friends. Funnily enough, I’ve met lots of new people in ‘real life’ without this website while I was on it; sadly, due to various circumstances, they’ve all ended up being people I only got to see once or twice and the issue of having no friends is still a problem… but at least I don’t use MeetMe anymore!

Nuclear Annihilation

As it has been a subject in the news lately, I’ve been thinking about the subject of nuclear annihilation and, more specifically, the morality of it. Of course, I think that firing a nuclear weapon pre-emptively is completely unjustifiable, but what about in circumstances where one has already been launched and is headed in your direction? Is it then right to send one back in retaliation? Well, no, I really don’t think that it is. The majority of people killed in a nuclear attack will be innocent civilians. To be honest, if you knew you were going to be incinerated by a nuclear bomb, why would it make you feel any better to know that another country full of innocent people was also going to meet that same fate? If anything, it will only make you feel worse. What would it do, other than to make a tragedy even bigger? That’s why the whole idea of nuclear weapons is totaly absurd to me.

Jetpac

Picture

Rare are my favourite video game developers and before they were Rare they were Ultimate Play the Game. Back when they were Ultimate, their first game was Jetpac and so this is technically the first game made by my favourite developer. You can understand why it’s something I’d be very interested to try. But, it being their first, might it prove to be quite lacking?
You play as an astronaut called Jetman as he lands on various different planets (which are all identical looking). You can collect treasures on each planet, but need to look out for hostile aliens. Before you can leave each planet you either need to fill your ship with fuel or construct a new ship (and there are several different spaceships you go through as your progress). You do this by grabbing the pieces/fuel cells and then carrying them over to the ship.
The level design is very basic; you have the same, single screen, layout of a few different platforms and items fall at random from the sky, while aliens fly across the screen in erratic patterns. Jetman is quite mobile, however, and his titular jetpac comes in pretty handy (as does his powerful laser gun). Walking or flying across one side of the screen will just bring you to the opposite side. As I said: very basic. There’s not even any music; just the blasting of your gun and the blips of exploding enemies.
Does this mean that the game is bad? Not at all! While it may be basic, it is still very fun once you get the hang of it. I will admit that it takes a little while to get into; if an alien touches you in any way, you explode and with a very underwhelming blip, your life is over. But once you master dodging the enemies, you should find it very enjoyable. I personally found it quite addictive and felt that the lack of soundtrack quite suited the sci-fi setting. So if you’re a fan of retro games, this is definitely something to try.

Halloween Thrills

Halloween is a funny time of year. With other events that I like, like Christmas, I get excited very far in advance and think about often. With Halloween, I generally don’t even think about it until October, but when it does arrive I tend to get quite excited. This is a little weird, I suppose, because I very rarely actually do anything on Halloween, but it’s just the time of year. Things are just starting to get colder and darker and everywhere you see there are things made to be creepy and spooky. I love it!
But, in a way, it is rather strange that anybody likes Halloween. The idea of Halloween is to celebrate things which frighten us; but being frightened is a negative emotion. Why do we enjoy being scared? Well, I think there’s a huge difference between enjoying the creepy feeling of a ghost story and anything which people will actually find scary; like the idea of becoming separated from friends. I think, therefore, that Halloween allows us to simulate the feeling of fear (often through things like books and movies) so that we can appreciate the feeling of an emotion, but not actually have to experience actual fear. It’s fun to watch a creepy film, for example, because you know that nothing in it will ever really happen, but you’re having fun pretending that it could and therefore enjoying a faux version of the emotion. That’s my take on it, anyway!

Ghostly Adventure

I’m a very logical, scientifically minded person. I’m going to tell a ‘ghostly’ anecdote in today’s blog post, but I don’t really believe that there’s anything but a rational explanation for all of this. Nonetheless, I did have an unusual and noteworthy experience during a visit to the graveyard the other day and therefore thought that it would be worth sharing here on my blog.
On Thursday, I was heading to the graveyard in order to take some photographs for today’s Finger Puppet Show strip. I always go to the older part of the graveyard, which is over one hundred years old and which is most often empty. You see, I don’t really like to get regular people in the backgrounds of my pictures, as it feels wrong of me to upload things that have images of unconsenting people in them, even if they are blurry and unrecognisable. Of course, sometimes I can’t avoid it, but I certainly always try to.
When I arrived at the quiet, old part of the graveyard, I could hear somebody walking around, so I didn’t take the camera out right away. I assumed somebody was there and wanted to wait for them to leave so that they wouldn’t walk into the background of any of my photos. However, while the sound of footsteps continued, nobody appeared and I couldn’t see anybody so I decided to take my pictures. Curiously, when I turned on my camera, it was going through some strange kind of distortion that I’ve never seen before and the picture on its screen was not very clear at all. It reminded me of the way camera’s react to Slender Man in things like Marble Hornets. So I could hear footsteps, but could see nobody at all and my camera is acting strangely, all in an old graveyard. Plus, when I showed a friend of mine the pictures, they thought they could see ghostly shadows in the background, but since they didn’t really stand out to me, I won’t share them.
Likely, the camera issue was a random glitch and the sound of footsteps was either wind or an animal scurrying in the grass, but still; it’s a fun and ‘spooky’ set of occurrences which make up my ghostly adventure. I hope you enjoyed reading it!

Castlevania

PictureCastlevania is a gaming series which has been around for a long time. It’s renowned for its use of gothic horror imagery and use of characters and creatures from literature and mythology. Most specifically, they tend to focus on Dracula. This game is what started it all.

The gameplay is a 2D action platformer. You play as a man named Simon Belmont and you fight through hordes of skeletons and other undead creatures with his signature weapon: the whip. There’s a general combination of having to jump over platforms, avoid enemies and fight enemies. A downside is, however, that Simon is rather sluggish and the majority of enemies are much more mobile than him. Often it feels downright impossible to avoid the enemies and in the later levels especially, I had a very hard time with the game.

But while the difficulty and control scheme might be off-putting for some, I find that the game does really well when it comes to atmosphere and music. Though, of course, the entire soundtrack is entirely 8-bit, it is still very, very good and it perfectly complements the game’s settings (which are all areas in and around Dracula’s castle). The game also draws a clear and heavy influence from the Universal Studios monster movies; not only is Simon on a quest to wipe out Dracula, but you’ll also see Frankenstein’s monster, the Mummy and other classical ‘monsters’ along the way. As a big fan of these films, I really appreciated all of the connections to them.

So, the game is fun and I really appreciated the way that it drew from a range of horror sources. Nonetheless, it is a very tough game and this may prove frustrating for many people. But it’s still well worth a play, if only out of curiosity! I’m sure, at very least, you’ll have a lot of fun playing the first few levels.

Returning to Writing

I know that for some people, once they’ve gone a little while without writing, it gets harder and harder for them to get back into the habit. It’s kind of like getting into the habit of not writing and then, on reflection, it seems hard to imagine that there was ever a period in their life when they had time in the average day to get some writing done. So, instead they do nothing, and also feel bad about doing nothing because they are a creative person and they need to write in order to be fulfilled.
So what can you do to get that motivation back? Well, I have a piece of advice which I’d like to offer in this blog post which I hope will be useful to you if this is the situation you’re in. Doubtlessly, when you write you are writing for your own imagined audience and you imagine how they are responding to everything you produce. So what I suggest is watching some television shows or reading some books which were released after there had been a significant period without them; so the first novel in a series after ten years, or something like that. They always tend to carry a sense of excitement, as they were obviously written with the context of having been a return. Maybe you could even read about the upcoming return of something you are very fond of. Carry that same sense of excitement into your own work and imagine that by writing, your imaginary audience is getting their first new story after a long period. Hopefully this will prove to be a good form of motivation.

Eating Food

Lately I’ve found that I don’t have quite as much of an appetite as I used to. But having said that, now that I work in Bath, I get to eat out a lot more often. Eating out is expensive, so I don’t do it too often, but I like to do it every now and then and, when I do, I like to try a new place. In the past, I was always very reserved when it came to trying new foods and would rarely experiment; I don’t like to take too many risks when it comes to my food. I have to say, though, that I really enjoy this recent food experimentation. Just yesterday I went into a place called Schwartz Bros. and they had a huge number of vegetarian burgers (rare). On a whim, I decided to buy one and it was definitely the tastiest burger I’ve ever eaten before! In fact, it will even be one of the tastiest things I have ever had. Were it not or that experimentation, I’d never have had that huge pleasure! I’ve been enjoying trying new foods around Bath and, actually, I am planning on starting another blog dedicated entirely to writing about different foods that I try. It may be a little while before I get around to it, but it is definitely something I’d like to do soon!

Super Paper Mario

PictureSuper Paper Mario was the third game in the excellent Paper Mario series, which takes the characters from the Super Mario series and presents them in a ‘paper cut out’ kind of art style while also telling much deeper stories than the main series ever does. Controversially, this may just be my favourite Mario game, or, at very least, my favourite 2D Mario game.

This game starts in the same way as 99% of the other games in the series: Princess Peach has gone missing and Mario must head out to get her back. Naturally, he and Luigi head to Bowser’s castle to rescue her, only to find that, while he was planning to kidnap her, he hadn’t actually gotten around to doing so. The mysterious Count Bleck then shows up and warps them all to another world; Bowser and Peach are then forced to marry one another and then, after Luigi causes a commotion, they all get separated. Mario meets Tippi, a butterfly-like Pixl creature, and finds his way to the town of Flipside, where he discovers that the end of all universes is coming…

That took quite a while to explain and, really, I’m only giving the most basic of introductions because this game’s story really is rather complex. I only wish that more games in the series featured a stronger plot focus. Not only is the story filled with lots of humour (especially when it comes to Bowser) but also lots of emotions, and at times it is really rather sad, which is very unexpected but very welcome. I also liked the fact that it was dealing with the grim subject of the end of all worlds; I’m someone who likes to connect the dots and knowing that Mario has crossed over with virtually every other series around, it really made me feel that I was saving all universes.

But, anyway, this is a game and I am sure you’re keen to hear about how it plays, rather than just its story! Unlike the first two Paper Mario games, this one is actually a side scroller. Sure, you’re able to explore the world quite freely, but it is still 2D and has a lot in common with the older Mario games when it comes to gameplay. One particular part of the game seems to be especially dedicated to the past and, as well as being full of funny/clever references, it also features many attempts to replicate the feeling of those games too. Significantly, however, you are also given the ability to flip to a 3D perspective whenever you need to; I found this to be very innovative and at times, very fun. Occasionally, however, it did feel a little under-utilised, and, in some ways, frustratingly limited. There are also several RPG-elements; you can level up to increase your HP and strength; you also use money to buy items and so forth and there are several side-quests to do as well. Mario’s not the only playable character either; you’ll later get others with their own unique abilities, but I shan’t spoil it.

It’s just such a fun game with an excellent story. I’ll admit, the second Paper Mario comes very close, but I think this one edges it out. There’s something compelling about the story and the doom-filled tone of the game contrasted with the light-hearted humour of many of its characters. On top of all that, it’s fun too, which is just as important. It’s entirely standalone, story-wise, so don’t worry about getting it without playing the other Paper Mario games first.

Bad People in Writing

I have a strange problem when it comes to writing bad people in fiction. When I first write them, I’ll make them despicable and totally unlikeable. But the problem is, I eventually start to enjoy writing as them and the more I enjoy writing as them the less ‘bad’ and unlikeable they become. You see, when I write as a character a lot, I then can’t help but make them a little more sympathetic, even if they are generally quite flawed. I think it ties in to how I view the world; I know some people will tell you that some people are ‘just bad’ but I don’t agree with that at all; nobody is ‘just bad’ and while people do sometimes realise that their actions are not ‘right’ that doesn’t mean that they are just a ‘bad person’ and to believe that is the case is a rather black and white way of viewing things. In fiction, a villain often is portrayed in a very black and white sort of a way, but I nearly always end of writing them more as anti-heroes after a while, rather than plain villains. I’m not entirely sure whether this is a strength or a weakness, but it is an interesting pattern I have noticed in my work…
