My Integrity as a Writer

For me, creatively, there are three things that I consider the most important:  one of them is updating this blog with my thoughts and stories from my life (and reviews), one of them is updating my webcomic and keeping it going with new storylines and the other is writing short stories. I’ll go through periods where my priorities change and I focus more on one than others, but these are the three things I consistently value the most.

I remember a time when the only writing I did was short stories: back then, I didn’t ever want to do any non-fiction. Even when I started keeping this blog, I was a bit unsure as it didn’t seem to fit with my fictional body of work. But slowly I became used to it and now I’m very pleased with the number of reflections and anecdotes which I’ve posted here.

Since leaving university, I’ve been trying hard to work as a writer (in fact, that’s what I do do) but this involves me writing lots of content for various businesses. A lot of the things I write have quite a quite a marketing-angle to them and are things which I’d never just choose to write. I sometimes wonder if things that I write because I have to (rather than because I want to) really have any value.

On a smaller scale, there have been one or two Finger Puppet Show strips and Trusty Water Blog posts which I’ve written so that I don’t miss updates and haven’t been too pleased with; they’re not terrible, but certainly lacking in the substance I like to think my better pieces have. But the thing is, these projects are both things I want to do, whereas blog posts for businesses are things I have to do.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m extremely thankful that I’ve been able to work as a writer and it’s honestly something I really love doing – it is my passion. However, sometimes it makes me feel a little sad to think that my substanceless pieces of marketing will soon outweigh the projects which I put the full extent of my creativity behind. If most of the writing I’ve done is pieces of marketing for various businesses, particularly businesses I know nothing about, do I have much integrity as a writer?

Well, while this is occasionally a thought which makes me a bit sad, I like to think that I still have my integrity. The very first piece of writing I was paid for (a piece about saving money) contained a paragraph on the virtues of keeping a Trusty Water Bottle. I quite enjoyed making that little personal paragraph back to me. This is generally what I like to do, I like to tie in a bit of the projects I care more about. I once created a character called The Content Market Ear and developed it’s story a bit in some blog posts for a business, before later introducing it in my Finger Puppet Show comic.

Sometimes I do write things which don’t have much substance to them and are only really about marketing, but I try to create pieces I’ll really care about as often as possible. At the end of the day, anybody who wants to live as a writer is going to have to write things like this, so I shouldn’t feel bad. After all, it’s extremely rare for someone to publish a novel at a young age and then work exclusively on fiction. Really, I’m extremely lucky that I have a job which I can tie back to my personal projects in any way! Very few people are given much creative freedom in their jobs and I am hugely grateful for the opportunities that I’ve had. This concern is just something that passes my mind every now and then and which I wanted to get out.

Continuing Fiction

One thing that I’ve noticed about recent pieces of fiction is that there is a strong emphasis on continuing to build upon the fiction that already exists, rather than to recreate things. Personally, I think this is a good thing. If you look at a lot of big, popular films, many of them are based on established franchises. Twenty years ago, these kinds of things would have been remakes, but these days, even if they’re something new, they’ll still have something that ties them back to their origins. It’s not just films either, but books, TV shows, video games and other mediums too. I like this, because I like to think of all works of fiction as equally valid: from the most obscure of video games to the most renowned literary novels.  I like to adopt the stance with my own works too; whenever I write fiction today, there are always ways that I can tie it all the way back  to my earliest work. It helps me to feel that I am always working on something valid, as I’ll always create connections to and build  upon everything I make. I think this is quite a good motivator to work, because then I’m always working towards one big thing. Then, when I consume fiction, I can also feel that I am working my way through one big thing.

Yoshi’s Woolly World

Yoshi's Woolly WorldYoshi’s Woolly World  is Yoshi’s first HD adventure and the opportunity was taken to make things very visually appealing. Obviously the characters in Yoshi games are not hugely realistic, so instead of aiming for realism with the HD graphics, they decided to try and make everything look like it’s made of wool. It looks wonderful.

As with almost every other Yoshi game, Yoshi’s Woolly World is a 2D platformer, In some regards a lot of this is retreading old ground, but the old ground is good fun, so I wouldn’t like to complain. I wouldn’t like to say that this game does nothing new either; the bosses all make good use of being in a 3D plane and so do a few of the levels. It’s a pleasant mixture of new ideas along with the familiar.

But let’s talk about the story (since that’s always important to me.) The fact that everything is made of wool is not just an art style, but also a plot device. Kamek travels to Craft Island turns several Yoshis into balls of wool and then steals them for Baby Bowser; two Yoshis remain and must reform their friends and defeat Baby Bowser. It’s a little hard to place this in regards to other Yoshi and Mario games and I would have liked a slightly more comprehensive story, but I didn’t mind too much. Essentially, this is entirely standalone.

If I were to sum up how it feels to play Yoshi’s Woolly World I’d use one word: pleasant.  The levels are fun and never too easy or too hard. Visually, everything looks nice and relaxing. The music is enjoyable and has a kind of “good time” feel to it. Actually, speaking of the music, there were one or two times where it was absolutely sublime. The soundtrack is good, but if it had all been on the level of the best tracks… wow.

Beyond the main game, there are a few lovely little extras. Firstly, the game is compatible with Amiibo and every one that you scan unlocks you a Yoshi with colours that looks like the character whose Amiibo you scanned. I really loved playing as Donkey Kong Yoshi, Lucina Yoshi and Ness Yoshi in particular. Another thing I liked a lot was that there’s a bestiary which fills up with all the enemy creatures you’ve seen, giving you their names and so forth – I always appreciate features like this. There’s also a cooperative mode, which is good to have if you prefer to play things with a friend.

On the whole, I wouldn’t say that Yoshi’s Woolly World was an especially groundbreaking game, but there also aren’t many bad things I can say about it either (it is sometimes hard to find health though). I used to play a level each day after work (when I had a chance) and it was really nice to unwind to. I guess I just maybe wish it could have done something a little more. Rating: 8.3/10

Don’t Care What Other People Think

Actually, despite the title of this blog post, I’m actually going to say that you should care about what other people think. Yes, controversial I know, but I  think that the phrase “Don’t care what other people think” actually leads to rather unhealthy attitudes. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of the time you really shouldn’t care about what other people think: if somebody thinks something bad about your appearance, your clothes, your voice, your personal beliefs, your job, hobbies or anything like that, you shouldn’t worry because people are in no position to judge you on these things. In that respect, this is a good phrase.

However, there are many cases where you should care about what other people think. What if you consistently do something which makes people anxious? If you regularly do something which makes people feel you don’t really care for them? What if many of your comments reflect casual racism or casual sexism? What if you’re friends are concerned you have a problem? All of a sudden, not caring about what other people think leads you to make very bad decisions, to hurt others and to live by an unhealthy attitude. Indeed, not caring what other people think can ultimately be very self-destructive, arrogant and even selfish. Its one of those phrases which sounds very nice, but once you unpack it, you realise it doesn’t have any real substance.

Geezers

The other day I was riding on the train and there were a group of geezers sitting a few seats behind me. I should make it clear, by the way, that they were self-proclaimed geezers and that’s not just something I’m calling them myself. I wanted to write about them because the things they said were absolutely ridiculous.

They were planning on heading to nightclubs soon, but didn’t think that that alone would be exciting enough. So what could they do to make a nightclub visit more exciting? Why, they wanted to start a fight, of course. I’m not even joking. These men on the train were talking about how they liked to pick a fight with the biggest person in nightclubs so that they could then enjoy the mayhem that ensued. One of the group had some reservations about the plan though, because a friend of theirs’ liked to do the same thing but got beaten up really badly and are now in hospital.

A little later on a woman got into the carriage and asked a non-geezer man if it would be okay to sit next to him. He told her it was fine, because he was just getting up to leave in a moment anyway. “Looks like nobody wants to sit next to me,” she said jokingly… I’m sure you know where this is going. “I’ll sit next to ya, love,” commented one of the geezers…

For me, it’s just a little hard to believe that people like this exist. Their lives must be so different to my own in every respect. It’s sad that some people want to live in such a violent and aggressive way. Hopefully they decided against nightclub fighting in the end!

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

Super Smash Bros. for 3DSSuper Smash Bros. for 3DS was the much anticipated fourth instalment in the Smash Bros. series and the first to be released for a handheld. The game was (and is) very, very popular and a huge success.

I have to be honest though – for me, this game was a little bit of a disappointment. Until this game, I felt as if the Super Smash Bros. games had gotten a little better each time, with Super Smash Bros. Brawl being absolutely fantastic. I didn’t feel like anything new was done with Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, which is the main reason for my disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, this is a good game that I can dip into a bit whenever I want and have a good time, but it felt like it could have been so much more.

So what new things does this game actually have to offer? Well, I suppose the first thing I should talk about is the new characters, since that’s what people generally get most excited about with Smash Bros. although, be warned, I am going to talk openly about the unlockable characters in the game, which some may consider spoilers. The reason I don’t class these as spoilers is that Nintendo was so open about every character in their marketing, that I doubt there are any secrets left. This, in itself, is actually something which was a bit of a shame for me; I like surprises.

Anyway, onto who’s in this game! One new character I was very pleased with, and who I enjoyed playing as a lot, was Villager, an Animal Crossing main character. Villager was very fun to play as and I felt that he really deserved his position. Another one was the Wii Fit Trainer, ‘star’ of Wii Fit; she was such an odd choice, but I appreciated how strange she was and had a lot of fun using her. Mega Man was a very big name that was added; as an iconic part of the NES era, it seemed fair that he was added and I thought it was quite nice (though I had not had much of a chance to get to know the series beforehand.) Pac-Man, one of the most recogniseable video game characters around, was also included, which was also nice, especially as he is one of the most fun characters in the game. Probably my favourite new addition was Robin, star of Fire Emblem: Awakening because I love that game and I love her. There are several others too (Palutena, Dark Pit, Lucina, Rosalina, Bowser Jr etc) but those were probably the biggest ones. I don’t dislike any one of these new characters and all of them have good move sets… I hadn’t really hoped for any of these characters though. Where were the new Donkey Kong characters? I’d been waiting for King K. Rool for a good seven years at this point! Where were the new Zelda characters? I don’t mean to be negative, because I do like all of them, but none of them really got my heart racing.

After the characters, I guess the stages are the next most important thing. While I think all of the characters were good, I think this game has quite a poor selection of stages. The only Star Fox stage is something from Super Smash Bros. Melee remade. The same goes for Donkey Kong. There’s a new Kirby stage, but it’s a weird thing inside an original Game Boy. The new F-Zero stage looks like a SNES game for some reason.  I know it’s about nostalgia, but this weird metatextuality takes me right out of the game and makes it harder for me to appreciate the exciting crossover that it should be. Having said that, there’s a EarthBound/Mother stage which is really fantastic; it makes a superb tribute to the series. There don’t really seem to be that many stages either, especially considering how many of them are returning old stages. I often feel like there’s quite a lack of variety when I play a few battles in a row.

The best unique thing in this game is a thing called Smash Run. Smash Run has you put into a world where you have to fight enemies from various different games, collecting stat increases as you do, so that you can prepare for a final battle. Very fun and a nice new addition… It’s just a shame it feels a bit underutilised. I felt it could have been given more significance. Beyond this you can also use Amiibo figures to train your own custom fighters and transport them between games. Speaking of customisation, you can also use your Miis as playable characters and you can make as many Mii Fighters, with unique moves, as you like. The was Nintendo’s way of letting you have anyone in it. I wasn’t that excited about this, but I’m sure others will be. Beyond this there are just the usual ‘Classic’ and ‘All-Star’ single player mode, which has you fighting characters in various orders, just like the other games. The real appeal, I think, is the multiplayer mode, and you have lots of options that allow you to ensure it is as fun for you as possible.

One last thing I’d like to talk about is downloadable content. For over a year after the game first came out, there was a long, drawn-out period in which downloadable content was added. In the end we got six new characters: Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Ryu, Cloud, Corrin and Bayonetta. So, three returning characters and four new ones. I wasn’t that excited about any of them. There were also a huge number of Mii costumes released, including King K. Rool, but to me these weren’t that exciting… I still bought some though! At least quite a few people were very pleased with characters like Cloud and Bayonetta – I am not hugely familiar with them and it made me feel like the choices were a little arbitrary. I feel they lost focus a bit, when choosing characters. The choices seemed to be random.

But, oh my goodness, this has become my longest video game review. In a way, I don’t really like how important Smash Bros. has become to Nintendo as a whole, because it has become more important just as, in my eyes, it has slightly declined in quality. I don’t want this to be a negative review on the whole, because I do have fun with it every time I play, I just don’t feel like it deserves the unending praise it seems to receive. It’s a very good game, just not very original or groundbreaking. Rating: 8.9/10

Anxiety

In the last blog post, I spoke about the Myrmidryad video ‘Privacy, Authenticity, TMI’ which was essentially about vloggers sharing every aspect of their lives in their videos. It gave me some cause for reflection since I share a lot about myself on this blog (go ahead and read it if you want to see what I thought) and today’s blog post is also inspired by the video.

Today I would like to talk a little about anxiety as that is something which affects me, but something which I don’t believe I have addressed on this blog before. I remember once a friend of mine was feeling very anxious about something and they were very apologetic, so I said to them “No need to apologise! I know the feeling very well!” to which they replied “What really? But you’re the most chilled out person I’ve ever met.” which made me very happy. I think I am generally quite good at hiding anxiety, though I’m not entirely sure that that kind of internalisation is very healthy.

Very recently, I was in a very high anxiety situation (perhaps the highest I have experienced) and I’d like to describe that a little. Anxiety is not just a case of feeling nervous, it is actually a very physical thing. Often it causes me to have headaches or chest pains; migraines, in the very worst cases. A friend of mine was talking to me at one point, but though I heard every word, I could not understand them; my mind was not functioning properly and I couldn’t put the pieces together. I got by with several general words and sounds of affirmation, but I can’t help but feel a bit guilty, since I did not actually know what they said. On the flip side, I also found it very hard to talk myself. The problem was that I was having a bout of breathlessness and I didn’t want to draw attention to myself by breathing deeply; this meant there were times when every single word required a lot of effort and I had to really concentrate on every word of every sentence I spoke.

The good news is that, these days, at least, very few things actually cause me to feel anxious. I have it down to a few identified triggers which I try to work on. But when I do feel anxiety, I find a form of meditation is helpful. Most often for me, anxiety is caused , in one way or another, by self-loathing, so what I do is try really, really hard to remember times when I have been very pleased with myself and happy. I have a selection of memories of myself with various different friends and I close my eyes and try hard to relive those moments. Obviously, I can’t always do this, but it’s a fairly effective way to neutralise anxiety for me. I have to be careful though, because occasionally a positive memory can be the cause of anxiety, if I determine that it is something which could never happen again due to how much my life has changed.

Thankfully, most of the causes of my anxiety have been resolved. In my experience, a combination of forcing myself into high-anxiety situations (or to face my fears, in other words) is the best way to overcome it in the long term. Of course, another very useful thing is to discuss it with friends and receive positive support from them. Overall, I wouldn’t say I was a very anxious person, but I do occasionally succumb to anxiety. I hope that, in time, I’ll have been able to overcome all of the triggers of my anxiety.

Authenticity in Blogging

The other day  I was watching the latest vlog video on the YouTube channel Myrmidryad. You know Myrmidryad? Run by a woman named Emma Darcy. Wrote a Trusty Water Blog post back in 2013. Was in a recent Finger Puppet Show strip. Hopefully that jogs your memory!

Anyway, her latest video was entitled ‘Privacy, Authenticity, TMI’ and is about the amount of things that vloggers share on their channels. I thought it was very interesting and, as somebody who also shares a lot about themselves (albeit in a blog) I thought I’d write a kind of response. Emma doesn’t really hold back from sharing anything about herself in her vlogs, to the extent that some people might be uncomfortable with her level of openness (though I’m certainly not – I think it makes for interesting perspectives), but she went on to say that other vloggers may not be very authentic in the way that they present themselves due to avoiding subjects like sex.

I thought that was quite an interesting point of view. It almost reminded me of Ulysses by James Joyce, since he tried really hard to include every aspect of life in it, but that book’s pretty terrible. Does one really need to present every single aspect of themselves in order for their self-presentation to be authentic? It’s an interesting question, but I don’t really believe so. Is it really inauthentic to believe that certain aspects of yourself are not important? I can understand the reasoning for thinking so, but I just don’t feel the same way.

To reflect on my own blogging, I think I paint a fairly authentic image of myself and my thoughts. Occasionally (but not often) people have told me that I have slightly misremembered the events that are covered in blog posts, so I’ll always add a note to explain when differing perspectives are offered. I may not ever write about sex or anything like that, but that’s because there’s nothing to write: I do not have any sexual experiences or thoughts. Although, having said that, I have occasionally had to remove blog posts because they contain sensitive information about other people; it is through fear of upsetting people I know that certain other things have  never been made into posts here (and never will be.)

Unfortunately, I suppose this blog post might seem a little scattered. It was a little hard to articulate what I wanted to say in this case and so a little hard to write a structured response. Basically, I feel like people can withhold any information about themselves that they do not wish to share while still remaining authentic – as long as nobody is downright lying, I think it’s okay. Equally, some vloggers and bloggers create a kind of persona for themselves and while this is not very authentic, it is a no less valid approach. How do you define authenticity in blogging/vlogging?

Monday

If you read this blog regularly, then you’ll have noticed that I didn’t post anything on Monday! Is this the first time I’ve ever forgotten? Well, there was one time that I went to bed and then realised I still needed to write a blog post, so then went back on my laptop to do so, but this might be the first time I ever actually missed an update without first warning.

So why didn’t I post on Monday? Well, I didn’t actually forget to do that, I just forgot to say that I wouldn’t be able to post on Monday when I wrote Friday’s entry! You see, on Saturday I travelled quite far so that I could see a good friend of mine for their birthday.  Since I did have to travel quite a bit to get there, it made sense for me to stay a few days and I only got back on Tuesday. There was the tiniest chance I could have written a blog post, but it didn’t happen.

Overall, it was a lovely trip and I really appreciated the opportunity to see my friend on their birthday and to meet new people. My particular favourite moment was knocking on their door early in the morning; they weren’t expecting to see me and were quite surprised. Plus, of course, it was nice to get a chance to spend time with somebody I don’t see very often. I also enjoyed navigating a journey on the London Underground, which I had to do on both my way in and out.

So that’s why I did not post on Monday. I hope it’s a good enough excuse!
